Notes from the 1980s
1982 Jill Booth won English Schools 400m Hurdles title in a new championship record of 61.7 sec which was also a new WAC record. Jill was then selected for the England Schools team to compete in the 300m Hurdles in France later in the year.

1984 Derick Capper finished 2nd in the English Schools 100m hurdles and was selected for England Schools in the Home Countries Schools int'l match where he also finished 2nd Both Derick Capper & Neal Petley reached AAA final for 100m hurdles with WAC being the only club with two finalists. Derick finnished 2nd (13.33 WAC club record) and Neal finished 5th (13.56 sec)

1985 At a specially arranged race within a WAC open meeting, Neal Petley finally equals the UK age 16 record for 110m Hurdles (15.1sec) after attempting to get the record be racing the distance as often as possible before he turned 17 in May. Neal wins North of England U20 110m Hurdles Title (14.8sec New WAC record) and finishes 4th in AAA U20 Final behind future world record holder Colin Jackson. This run placed Neal as the top ranked 1st year junior in the country and earned him his first Great Britain Intn'l vest competing and finishing 4th in Belgium against Belgium, Italy & Holland. Neal also gained selection for both North of England Junior and Senior teams this year before leaving the club and joining Sale Harriers and gaining several more Int'l and Northern vests. Also competing in the U20 Int'l match in Belgium was WAC 400m runner Jon Rigg who competed in the 4x400m relay before going on to be part of the Gold Medal winning 4x400m relay team at the European Junior Champs held in Cotttbus, East Germany later that year.

John Rigg was a member of the Great Britain team which won the 4 x 400m relay in the European junior championships.
