Warrington is not renowned for its hills yet recently has managed to produce some notable individual performances in the sport of fell running. Three of our junior members have represented England in World Championships in recent years. Karrie Hawitt and Jason McGonigle all coached by Mike Hancock have gained international honours in this toughest of sports.

The fell relays provide a tough and varied test with individual, pairs and navigation legs over tough terrain this year in the fells above Mythlemroyd in the South Pennines. Warrington AC entered a team for only the second time and were confident of improving on that performance from 2004 at Kinder Reservoir where we finished in 65th position.

On leg one 17 year old Jason McGonigle had a fine run amidst older and more experienced runners to finish 22nd of 118 competitors covering 5 miles of boggy, tussocks with 1500 feet of ascent.

The navigation leg involved a pair of runners plotting their way around a mapped course choosing their own route to visit 7 checkpoints. It is an unusual and amusing site to see pairs all over the landscape scurrying about in different directions all clutching map and compass. This was likely to be the leg where Warrington lost most ground on the teams around them and Neale Stephens and Steve Burthem finished the leg in 50th position. Neale navigated an almost faultless route with Steve twisting an ankle early on slowing the pair down in the rougher boggy sections of the moors.

On the last leg Neil Crompton running the same course as leg one but in an anti clockwise direction ran soundly to pull back some time and bring the team into the top 50 to finish 46th out of 111 finishing teams. This was an improvement of 19 places and the team can look forward to next years event which will be held somewhere in the Bowland hills.
