The Cheshire Cross Country Championships took place on Saturday 6th January at Knights Grange Winsford and were a resounding success for Warrington Athletic Club with 3 individual and 5 team gold medals along with 6 other individual and 5 other team medals over the 12 races. The course was very muddy and waterlogged and got worse as the day went on due to continuous rain.
Liam Burthem in the under 11 boys got the day of to the perfect start with a devastating display of front running to destroy his opposition and win by 41 seconds. Liam led his team of Cameron Field (3rd) and Tom Kenwright (5th) to the team gold and the B team of James Jackson (7th), Kyle Slater (18th) and David Gerrard (23rd) took the bronze medals. In the girls under 11 race Sarah Jervis (5th) led her team of Ashleigh Wrench (6th) and Holly Tidd (9th) to the team gold medal and Megan Green finished in 14th place. In the under 13 races Luke Johnston (4th) led home the A team of Sean Austin (5th) and Alex Wort (6th) to the gold medals and the B team of Lee Lockwood-Bent (7th), Stephen Darbyshire (11th) and Jack Chilton (14th) took the silver medals. The C, D and E teams finished in 7th, 9th and 10th places respectively. At under 15 level Tom Jervis (3rd) and Paul Beesley (18th) were the only representatives from the club while in the girls race Louise Sullivan (4th) led Rachel Jefferson (7th) and Katie Vandewalle (13th) to the bronze medals with the B team of Sarah Griffiths (14th), Vicky Jewitt (23rd) and Natasha Rose (28th) were 7th team. The under 17 races resulted in two more team gold and four more individual medals. In the boys event Danny Cliffe in conditions which suited him best romped to victory from Stephen Broadhurst with Lawrence Walker in 4thcompleting the team while Mat Jackson (5th) and Mike Williams (9th) also ran well. In the girls race Rhiannon Rainford (2nd) combined with Lucy Gemmell (3rd) and Amy Talbot (4th) to take the gold medals with Sophie Stephens in 11th place. In the under 20 events Jason McGonigle won the men's race with Mike Timmins in 5th place while Lauren Stephens finished in 6th place in the Ladies race. In the senior women's race Sarah Hardy (10th) led the team of Joanne Young (15th) and Alison Patrick (17th) to the bronze medals with Emma Makin (23rd) and Gill Stephens (24th) also running well. Joanne finished 4th veteran and 2nd o/45 while Gill was 9th veteran and 3rd o/40. The day was completed by the senior men's race in which Neil Ashcroft (22nd), Steve Burthem (24th), Paul Dodsworth (41st), Tony McCarthy (46th) and Neale Stephens (53rd) ran but were unable to complete a team. Steve was 1st veteran o/45. |
