Warrington Athletic Club athlete Phil Knowles took part in the European Masters Athletic Championships in Poznan Poland between 20th and 30th July running in the 100, 200 and 400 metres in the over 45 age group. In the 100 metres on 22nd July Phil won his heat in 12.29 seconds qualifying for the final later that day. In the Final Phil finished in 5th place in a time of 12.18 seconds. Two days later it was the 400 metres the event that Phil had won the title at when in the over 40 age group. In the heat Phil again came in 1st in a time of 56.79 seconds but in the semi-final later in the day was unable to produce a similar result finishing in 6th place and failing to make the final. On the 27th July he was to finish in 3rd place in his heat of the 200 metres qualifying for the final later in the day but his exertions finally caught up with him when he was unable to finish. Having been unsuccessful in his attempts to win individual medals Phil was eventually to become a medallist when on the final day 30th July he was part of the Gold Medal winning Great Britain teams in the 4x100 and 4x400 metres relays. | (No pictures of the event) |
