The
North of England Young Athletes Road Relays took place at Sport city
Manchester on Sunday 1st October and for once Warrington Athletic Club's
under 17 boys were not the stars of the show. They were overshadowed by
the under 17 girls team who produced a magnificent performance to win the
title for the first time ever. Heather Timmins on the first leg ran
superbly to hand over in the lead recording the second fastest time of the
day with a lead of about 300 metres. Lucy Gemmel took over and ran
steadily to protect the lead eventually passing over a 17 second advantage
to Rhiannon Rainford but significantly also 38 seconds clear of third
place. Rhiannon ran an excellent last leg recording the 12th fastest time
to hold on for the Gold Medals by 7 seconds from Rotherham who had taken
over in 3rd place. The B team finished in 16th place. The under 17 boys
team of Stephen Broadhurst, Mat Jackson and Lawrence Walker all had
excellent runs with only 6 seconds separating them on their individual
times. Stephen on first leg handed over in third place to Mat who moved
through to 2nd place before passing to Lawrence who brought the team in
for the Silver Medals. In the under 13 boys race the team of Ryan O'Neill,
Alex Wort and Luke Johnston finished in an excellent 6th position with the
B team in 17th and the C team in 20th place, the D team were unable to
field a third stage runner and did not finish. In the under 15 boys the A
team of Tom Jervis, Danny Jackson and Paul Beesley finished in 27th place
while the B team were incomplete. In the Girls under 15 race the team of
Jade Llewellyn, Rachel Jefferson and Louise Sullivan finished in 12th
place while the under 13 team of Vicky Hamilton, Sally Kershaw-Moore and
Heather Beeton finished in 28th place.
